Therapy is a collaborative process between the person seeking help and the therapist. It is suitable for anyone seeking to address troublesome feelings, develop greater understanding of current difficulties, and find a deeper self-awareness of themselves and their relationships with others. Both counselling and psychotherapy take place in a comfortable, private and confidential setting at my practice in South East London. |
What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
People from all walks of life seek therapy for many different issues. Sometimes there is a very specific reason, but in other cases the immediate cause of distress is less apparent.
Counselling tends to focus on a recent onset problem, such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, or some other life event. It is usually of short to medium term duration, and the sessions are once a week.
Psychotherapy is designed to work with more complex and deep-rooted difficulties, which may have built up over a long period of time, often from childhood. These difficulties may present themselves in a less-focussed way; for example, a generalised feeling of anxiety or sadness. Chronic and difficult problems, because of their complexity and long-standing nature, generally require greater time to disentangle and work through.
I have undertaken rigorous and thorough clinical trainings in counselling and psychotherapy, and provide both approaches in my private practice. To find out more about my training, qualifications and clinical experience please click here.
Beginning therapy
It is not uncommon to feel hesitant or unsure about seeking help. In our initial session/s there is an opportunity for us to gain an understanding of each other and explore whether therapy might be useful. There is no commitment at this initial stage.
If you decide you would like to continue, we will agree regular days and times to meet. The establishment of regular sessions is important as it facilitates, and give momentum to, the therapeutic process. Most people find that regular contact provides a sense of security and continuity whilst they are working on emotional difficulties.
